Cedar Run Falls

Posted on October 18, 2016 Written by Leave a Comment

Nearby Areas: Shenandoah, Shenandoah National Park, Stanley   State: Virginia   Ease of Trail: Strenuous

The hike begins by heading down Cedar Run Trail. After about 20 yards you will come to the Big Meadows Trail, keep going downward on Cedar Run Trail. Cedar Run will start becoming visible on your right hand side in about 0.8 miles. You’ll also see several small ponds along the way.

At 1.5 miles you will cross Cedar Run and climb the opposite bank. Go 0.2 miles further you and you will arrive at a natural water slide (some people consider this Upper Cedar Run Falls) with a small pond at its base. Go a short distance further on the trail to reach Cedar Run Falls, the tallest falls on the hike. As a bonus you can also see Half Mile Cliffs from here.  The base of Cedar Run Trail is not much further, however there is no trail leading directly to the base. To return to your car, simply turn around and go back the way you came.

While the hike down is easy, the hike returning to your car is quite difficult, which is why labeled this trail as hard due to the 1,500 foot elevation gain on your way back. If hiking later in the day, make sure you give your self enough time for your return trip as it will most likely take twice as long to return as it did to go down.
