The Best Waterfalls in Tennessee
If you only have time to do one thing in Cookeville, you should go see the waterfalls. The most famous spot is Burgess Falls State Park. This park has four different waterfalls on one river! Every waterfall in Burgess Falls State Park is a little bit different, which makes exploring them feel like a treasure hunt.
The biggest one, Burgess Falls, is over 130 feet tall. With water falling from that height it makes a sound like loud thunder that you can feel in your chest.
The trail to Burgess Falls starts just off of the parking lot with Falling Water Cascades. This is a perfect spot if you do not want to walk a long way. You’ll soon reach Upper/Little Falls and cross a wooden bridge. You’ll climb a steep staircase to reach Middle Falls. Continue down the trail to reach the crown jewel of the park – Burgess Falls.
Please note: If you take the ADA overlook paved trail to the overlook where the pavement ends, this is an overlook for Upper/Little Falls. You can continue down the gravel road until it ends. You’ll see a staircase heading down. This will take you to the Burgess Falls overlook.
You do not even have to leave the city to find nature. City Lake Falls is a hidden treasure that is very close to downtown. It is a smaller waterfall, but it is very peaceful. It’s an easy trail that starts out paved, but turns to gravel that dead-ends into the waterfall viewing platform. Many people like to visit this spot because it is quiet and easy to get to.
Waterloo Falls is a 35 foot waterfall located about 15 minutes north of Cookeville. You need to purchase a pass to enter Waterloo Falls, but it’s worth the cost. One really great thing about this waterfall is that you get two family friendly waterfalls for a minimal amount of effort. Upper Waterloo Falls, while only 5 feet tall, is very wide and quite pretty. Waterloo Falls and Upper Waterloo Falls also are great places to swim, so if you’re looking for swimming hole, here’s one for you.
Hardy-Reagan Falls is a small, relatively unknown water that is between 5-6 feet in height, but is very wide. It has a small “beach” area in front of the waterfall, slightly off to the side. The rocky cliff behind the waterfall is tall and interesting to look at. The cliff adds dimension to the waterfall and sets Hardy-Reagan Falls apart from the many other waterfalls with this shape.
Plan a Waterfall Day Trip
If you want to see as many waterfalls as possible, you should plan a day trip. Because Cookeville is in the middle of so many parks, you can see three or four waterfalls in just one day! Cookeville is also close to Sparta, which has its own set of spectacular waterfalls. When we visited Cookeville, we did a waterfall day trip in Cookeville one day and then a waterfall day trip in Sparta the next day.
When you go on your trip, you should bring a backpack with water and snacks. It is also a good idea to wear closed-toed shoes that can get a little bit dirty. Some of the paths are very easy to walk on, while others might have rocks or tree roots. If you are looking for hikes that are not too hard, there are many “easy” trails in the East Central Tennessee area. These trails are great for kids or anyone who wants a relaxing walk in the woods.
Safety is the most important part of a waterfall trip. The rocks near the water can be very slippery, even if they look dry. Nearby Waterfalls
Cummins Falls, is located 8 miles away from Cookeville. It is Tennessee’s eighth largest waterfall in volume. This 75 foot waterfall, on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River on the Eastern Highland Rim, is one of the most distinctive waterfalls in Tennessee. You can view the waterfall from an observation deck or purchase a gorge pass to go to the base of the waterfall.
Rock Island State Park is just a little over 30 minutes from Cookeville and has several amazing waterfalls, trails and a large beach area.
Play and Relax at Dogwood Park
After you spend time in the forest, you might want to visit a park right in the middle of the city. Dogwood Park is a favorite spot for residents in Cookeville. It is located downtown and has a lot of green grass where you can run or have a picnic. The park is famous for its very large playground. It has slides, swings, and places to climb that will keep you busy for a long time.
One of the coolest things at Dogwood Park is the interactive water fountain. This is not a fountain that you just look at. It is a fountain that you can play in! The water splashes up from the ground in different patterns. Many families bring a towel and spend the whole afternoon splashing around.
The park also has a large stage. Throughout the year, the city holds special events here. You might find a puppet show, a movie night under the stars, or people playing music. There are also nice paved paths that go all around the park. These are perfect for riding a scooter or taking a walk. Dogwood Park shows that you do not have to go deep into the woods to enjoy being outside in Cookeville.
Outdoor Fun at Cane Creek Park
If you want to spend a day near the water without hiking a steep trail, Cane Creek Park is the perfect place to go. This park is very large and has a beautiful 56-acre lake right in the middle. Because the water is calm, it is a great spot to try fishing. You might catch a bluegill or a catfish! If you do not want to fish, you can rent a paddle boat. These boats are fun because you use your feet to make them go, just like riding a bike on the water.
The park also has a long paved path that goes all the way around the lake. It is about two miles long. This path is very flat, which makes it easy for kids to walk or ride their bicycles.
While you walk, keep your eyes open for animals. You will almost always see ducks and geese swimming near the shore. Sometimes, you can even spot a turtle sunning itself on a log. There are also several play areas with swings and slides if you still have energy to burn.
If you enjoy games, you should try the disc golf course. Disc golf is like regular golf, but you throw a plastic frisbee into a metal basket instead of hitting a ball into a hole. Explore History at the Cookeville Depot Museum
Nature is not the only thing to see in Cookeville. You can also learn about how people used to travel a long time ago. The Cookeville Depot Museum is located in a very old building that used to be a train station. It was built over 100 years ago! Today, it is a museum where you can see real trains from the past. The most exciting thing to see is the giant steam engine.
It was built in 1912 and is made of heavy black iron. As it is outside, you can actually walk right up to the train even if the museum is closed and take photos. There is also a bright red caboose. we saw several groups taking photos there last time we visited.
Inside the museum building, there are tiny model trains that move around on tracks. It looks like a miniature version of a real town!
Learning about the railroad is important because the trains are the reason Cookeville grew into a big city. A long time ago, trains brought food, clothes, and mail to the people living here. Walking through the museum feels like stepping back in time. It is a great place to visit if you love big machines and cool stories. Best of all, it is located right next to the historic West Side, where you can find some of the oldest buildings in the whole city.
Historic West Side Shopping and Treats
After you have spent your morning exploring waterfalls and parks, you should head to the Historic West Side. This is one of the oldest parts of Cookeville. The streets here are lined with beautiful brick buildings that have been around for a very long time. It is a wonderful place to walk around because the shops are close together. You can find unique bookstores, toy shops, and places that sell handmade gifts.
If you get hungry, the West Side is famous for its treats. You must stop by Cream City Ice Cream. This shop has been a part of Cookeville for many years. They have over 40 different flavors of ice cream! You can get your ice cream in a handmade waffle cone that smells like fresh cookies. It is the perfect way to cool down after a long hike in the Tennessee sun.
Another place you cannot miss is Ralph’s Donut Shop. This shop is so special that it was officially put on the National Register of Historic Places in 2025. This means the government thinks it is an important part of American history! People travel from all over to try their glazed donuts and apple fritters. They have been making donuts the same way since 1962. Grabbing a box of donuts is a great way to end your day of exploring.
The Spokes Sculpture
Located in Historic West Side, right next to the Cookeville Depot Museum, is a striking arch of welded bicycles has become one of the Upper Cumberland’s most distinctive landmarks – a place where art, history, and local identity converge.
At first glance, the Spokes Sculpture looks like something out of a dream: dozens of bicycles – some sleek, some antique, even a multi-seat oddity – fused together into a steel arch. Stretching roughly 36 feet wide and standing about 14 feet tall, it frames the entrance to the Tennessee Central Heritage Rail Trail. At night, subtle LED lighting transforms it into a glowing portal, adding a touch of magic to downtown Cookeville’s streetscape.
